you may recall I was recently concerned I might look a bit of a knob riding round on my super shiny Merckx.
well......
I didnt have to wait until i had built it

Last week on returning home after a 12hr shift I couldnt find a parking space so I recalled my very friendly neighbour had offered me his parking space (it is in an old block of flats ......under an arch

As i went in .....BANG....

I had forgotton my bike on the roof cycle rack......one specialized sequioa (planned to be winter bike) written off....
the guys at the LBS (once they stopped pi$$ing themselves) said it is actually quite common (doesnt make me feel better!

still.......if it had been the Merckx I would have cried for a month

off to pick up new winter bike later...

That's one of the advantages of putting the bike inside the car
  • Errm... my brother once crunched his rather low tow-bar mounted bike on the up ramp of a ferry
and in a tizzy over being late for a flight (on to which his bike was subsequently not allowed !) he trod on/tripped up on his back wheel, wrecking it and messing himself up too!
    Doh!
My son once made the 'forget to unclip when you stop' trick for teh 3rd time ona ride - furious and embarrassed he aimed a kick at said bike leaving a LARGe dent in teh top tube....

Ah - I knew there was an advantage to having an embarrassing kiddie-mobile like our Alhambra!

Perhaps you could use the money from your swear box (now filled, no doubt) to pay for new bike? Still, at least you have the fun of getting some new wheels, and the sales are still on...Condor have some lovely stuff with money off just now...

It's just a hill. Get over it.

there is a little dent in the roof of the car....to add to all the others!
ive managed to salvage a fair ammount of gear off the bike so its not all bad news

and the most important thing is that no one saw

You're certainly not the first and you won't be the last.

Years ago my best mate's dad wiped out the pair of bikes on the roof while pulling into a layby on the way back from the Lake District.
This one is set back off the main road with a height restriction. Thankfully the entry speed is low otherwise it could've been nasty.

Good news that is wasn't your best bike.
  • Noooooo.

i'm planning to get a roof rack to drive me and my mate down to the etape and its the one thing thats been preying on my mind - i'm just the sort of person to forget about it - maybe i'll get a van instead.

Years back you could buy a spring-loaded sign that attached to your car bonnet by magnets. When driving, the airflow would keep the sign pushed flush to the bonnet but when slowing down - like when entering a car park - the spring could overcome the force of the air and the sign popped up to reveal "Toys on Top!"

The thing that will catch you out is the height restrictions on the toll booths on the French motorways. Towbar mounted carriers are best.

Be careful with this. An bike exposed to wind or worse rain at the sort of speed the car is travelling will strip your bike of grease.

I'm all for towbar carriers, even if it does look a little odd on a Renault Clio :D

Least it was just a bike
Guy I used to sail with totalled three UK Olympic Sailboats (probably worth 10k each?) driving a minibus and twin trailer into a Garage forecourt flat roof...

He tried to claim he had right of way...

The other week i was trying to reverse out a driveway with bikes on the back and in the dark. Unfortunately I had managed to forget what reversing lights don't light up, the roof of the well. The crunch of the cars c-pillar hitting the slates was worrying, amazingly I managed to avoid whacking the bike off the well, missed by around 1cm
