The damage a broken spoke can do...

Pulled up at lights, muppet on a foldie pulls ahead of me, so when lights go green and we both turn right I overtake. Suddenly, back of bike slews across the road, almost taking me down (not funny on the Gray's Inn Road). Thought at first the foldie d1ck had hit me.

Anyway, pull over to side to see what's up...and the rear mech's in the wheel.

Seems (I think) that a spoke on the freewheel side popped, caught the mech and pulled it into the wheel. Bent the gear hanger as well.

Will assess the damage later, may be redeemable, rear mech (old non-SIS 105) seems still functional but is bent a lot...

The foldie tw%t didn't stop to check I was OK, surprise surprise.

How long can I ride with a spoke down on a 36 hole rim, and how much to fix it? It's an old bike on 27" wheels so a new wheel will mean a new wheelset...plus tyres, tubes, cassette, chain...

It's just a hill. Get over it.

should last with a spoke missing for a fair while.

might need to tweek the wheel to make sure tension is ok round it.

i've ridden with missing spokes a fair bit, but that was on mountain bikes

Yeah, I've bitten the bullet and booked it into Condor for some TLC

The gear hanger can be bent back, and I don't think the rear mech is too badly damaged, anyway a new one (say a Sora) is only £20 or so

Is it karma for being so abusive about someone on a folding bike?

You should be able to pick up a Sora mech from CRC, for about a tenner.

I agree with Andy P. If you hadn't been so full of anger that a foldy was quicker off the lights than you, it might never had happened.

    :D

Only joking hope there is no serious damage.

He wasn't quicker than me - he mightily consumed my dust...for about 20 yards
