Youth's bikes

My younger brother is 13 next birthday (monumental age gap ) and he wants a "proper" mountain bike to thrash round the forest, he fancies a go at a bit of dirt jumping and mad stuff like that as he already has a BMX.
He's bang on 5foot tall but obviously growing at the rate of most young teens. I spotted a Kona Shred 2-4, it looks like a proper but shrunked dirt jumper with 80mm forks and a good set up all round, even got Maxxis tyres  it's a 24" wheeld bike that only comes in the one frame size being 13". Would this be suitable?
Kona Shred 2-4
Does anyone have other ideas in a similar vein, he actually preferes the colour of the '07 bike (browny bronze) but I can;t find one anywhere in internerd world

Here you go for £325 http://www.rutlandcycling.com/ProductDe ... 22383fd8b7
Got my lad one for Christmas.
If it's too small, a normal Shred should fit."Internet Forums - an amazing world where outright falsehoods become cyber-facts with a few witty key taps and a carefully placed emoticon."0 -
Cheers for that splasher, I phoned Rutland today and they said that the 2-3 would be too small for him and potentially a waste of money.
Thye suggested a full sized small shred, but they're too expensive, any ideas around the £300-£400 range?0 -
You're always best trying bikes for size, but deals like this are available on last years models:

After looking for a bike for my 11 year old son I decided I'd be better off building him a small-framed 26" wheeled bike instead of buying one as it seems kids bikes are either very heavy, very expensive or not very good. I preferred 26" wheels because that way it was easier to get parts and in fact most of the bike was built up with spares I had lying around.
It's based on a 14" trials frame bought 2nd hand, with Manitou Mars Elite which are very light (under 3 pounds) but were also cheap 2nd hand and work well with a light rider. The bike is quite light (25lbs or so), has disks brakes (avid mechanicals) and an XT drive-chain (all 2nd hand) so works at least as well as an expensive shop-bought bike but only cost a couple of hundred quid to put together.0
