I am going to upgrade the standard crap pedals on my bike when it eventually arrives in the UK and I defo want flats. I think its going to be the DMR V8's.

Interested to know if you guys reckon the V12's are worth the extra money. (the bike I am getting is £830) are the £50 V12 pedals a bit over the top or worth the money?

V8 £25 (approx)
V12 £50 (approx)

Wellgo Mag pedals are almost identical to V12 mag's & a lot cheaper.

    Definately V8's.
If youve ever tried preloading the bearings on a v12 its not much fun. Plus if you want to replace them, theyre a sealed unit and therefore are all ordered from DMR.
Sat for an hour or two a few weeks ago and replaced all the bearings in my v8s, wiped the crap out and theyre exactly like new. Except a bit scuffed.

I have no desire to use SPD's I dont like the idea of having to use special footware to ride the bike. Besides I can keep up with all my friends who do have SPD's, I kinda like the fact I do everything they do with flats.
  • i have the v8's and v12's. I prefer the V12's personally.

I can do everything on flats I can do on SPDs, I tend to crash less on SPDs and I am actually faster... no choice there for me...

I'd struggle to go back to flats now, I think I'd even go straight to SPDs if I got into DH...

Wellgo MG1s. 200g lighter than a V8, and last longer, for the same price!
  • i went for v12s, got them on ebay for £40 new. much better than v8s, sealed and maintenance free, they go on for years.

both v8s and v12s grip superbly and stick to the soles of your feet

hmmm interesting that Wellgo MG1 are being mentioned, never heard of them B4 now, if they are 200g lighter then V8 and the same (ish) as V12 then got to be worth a look. Thanks for the help here. I gues it will be between the V8 and the Wellgo....
  • I have a £1200 Stumpjumper and a £600 (well wife has that one) Rockhopper Disk.

Both have V8s - The V8s on wife's were from my old (1997) Stumpy - and have lasted many years of complete abuse - great pedals.

Only gripe is that the paint is falling off the black ones on my bike (wife's are silver) already.

I had SPDs on the old Stump for years - hated them and switched to V8s - riding became much more fun again.
Two Stumpjumpers, a Rockhopper Disk and an old British Eagle.

Wellgo make the pedals for DMR. The MG1 has the same axle and bearings ast the v12, but a lighter mag body.

  • I'm just gonna pipe up for some Crank Bros 5050 X's. Been using them in horrifically muddy and rainy conditions. Never lost grip once and they're coming up like new. Muchos recommended.

Incase anywone is interested I have just got a pair of Wellgo MG1s, very light, bearings feel really smooth, and the white paint has a kind of pearlescent effect. Very Pleased,

dmr v12s are stronger than mg1s because on wellgos the spindle doesnt go all the way through the pedal, thats its weak spot. but you cant have it all lightness and strength

i run magnesium v12s on the stumpy and willow and think they are the biz if a bit pricey.
  • Had V8s but then changed them because I needed a different colour, and just decided to get the V12 mags,as you do

Haven't noticed anything between them both tbh.
They're grippy as hell, they both spin and can seemingly take knocks and lead a permanent life covered in cack.

I haven't delved into the internals though, and for what they cost I won't bother either.
When they're grinding and obviously on their last legs,I'll just buy a new set

They're at the top of the tree for me though, and I won't consider any other pedal now,but I do question the worth of V12s over V8s with my 'buy new' attitude,so I'll probably go back to V8s next time around.

I have Orange Wellgo Mags. They are good pedals, lotsa of grip, haven't slipped yet. The paint on these pedals comes off, its simple, if its coloured it will inevitably rub on the soles of your feet and come off.

The Wellgo might not be as strong as the spindle does indeed stop before the edge of the pedal, but does that actually make any difference at all?

The Wellgo MG1s will be fine for your purpose, they're great pedals. Search for them on Ebay to save cash.

If you're not used to riding flats, buy shin pads now and don't wait until you've repeatedly perforated your legs like me!
