After tooling around in some local Woods and doing a bit on the Ridgeway, next Weekend I am off to the Forest Of Dean with some mates for some proper trail riding. The guys I am going with are suggesting that I hire a full sus bike for the day but I would really like to use my Kona Hoss(08) hardtail. So what I really want to know is am I going to be OK on my bike or should I hire the Full Sus?

  • i would have thought you'd be fine on a hardtail to be honest, but then again i;ve still never found the "secret" sections of singletrack there so cant comment!

take it you know where they are though??

Yeah I'd stick with a hardtail not really anything that needs a full sus their unless you're doing the downhill bit.

Do you kow the conditions there at the mo, bound to be really really muddy.
  • Thanks for the replies. The guys I am going with go there almost every week and have a route planned but I've never been before they said that it was muddy in places but mostly it was OK.The tyres I've got are Maxxis Ignitors so hopefully that will be fine.

use your hard tail and do your best to keep up, you'll feel all smug after your friends said you will need a full sus.
  • Well what can I say, what a great day over in the FOD yesteday great weather, was a bit muddy in places. The Hoss stood up to all the abuse I could throw at it including 3 offs, 2 on the downhill sections and one in some mud. The look on my mates face as I appeared jogging alongside him, having abandoned the bike was priceless :lol::lol:

Be warned, I've not found ignitors to be particularly stellar in the gloopy stuff. But otherwise have a blast on Hoss!
