Ive been looking for a cheaper bike for my girlfriend. She doesnt want a fancy bike, just one thats acceptable. I sort of know what to look for but Id like your advice if you would. Ive seen this Saracen at 200 and it seems ok to me. Has an aluminium frame and a disc brake and everything. http://www.ukbikesdepot.com/products.php?plid=m1b0s2p181

i bougt my misses a giant femail boulder from lbs for about £230 no disc but good spec
  • It's got a damped fork, which is a bonus. Probably not too bad a price, but that cable disc brake won't be the best, and will probably need constant fettling. If you can extend the budget a bit you'll get a lot more for your money. How about a nice pink GT?

It might be worth explaining to your girlfriend that it's not just about bikes being 'fancier' - more money normally means lighter, faster, more comfortable (better shocks), safer (harder wearing, better brakes), etc.

I've been particularly impressed with Specialized's range of D4W (design 4 women) range this year. Spec wise they don't always look the best value but they've really put a lot of thought into the geometry and sizing, plus they've teamed up with RS to offer female specific versions of their forks!

Budget should also somewhat be dictated by what's most suitable - make sure she tries before buying - a bike might only be £200 but if it's not suitable, it's a wasted £200...
