Bike weight

Out of curiosity I weighed my bike today and it tipped the scales at 12kg. This seemed quite heavy to me but doing a quick browse on the web, few bikes seem to display weight.

The power/speed/cals type calculator I use has a default weight of around 9kg, I don't know if that's the standard.

How much do your bikes weigh?

    About 8Kg.

My commuting bike with all the gizmos and mudguards must be over 12kg though.

Is there a rough guide for how much you have to spend to lose each kg?

The law of diminishing returns? If you are spending at least a grand on a road bike you're starting to look at 8Kg and less. From there you're spending a lot more money to save a couple of grams.

My training bike is around 11kg. It's a low end aluminium frame with a low end groupset on it. In fact the rear wheel is worth considerably more than the rest of the bike. But it's a training bike so as long as the gears work and the contact points are in exactly the same position as my race bike it doesn't matter.

My road race bike weighs a little over 7kg. This only cost me about £750 - £800 though, you can put something very light together with a little research. I built this up myself from new parts which were cheap as they're not currently 'in vogue'. For example, a Campag Chorus chainset and FSA titanium BB cost me £70 as everyone is buying UltraTorque which dropped the price of square taper.

Hypocrisy is only a bad thing in other people.

Below 15 lbs! That is a very light bike for that money! Starting with a 2nd hand carbon TCR f'set and mainly ditto parts, 4 years ago it cost me 1600 quid to get to just over 16 lbs. As I recall, at the time I calculated ANOTHER grand to lose maybe another pound.

In general, my bikes never weigh as little as other people's, even when seemingly identical.

Should be just under 8kg for my summer bike, and around the 10kg (on the plus side) for my winter.

I think my new specialized allez double is listed at 10.5kg (no accessories so add pump, bottle, cage, set of tools, computer = another kg)

My halfords hack hybrid is 16.5kg with above accessories lights and mudguards

It's perfectly do-able (if you're careful), you also need to avoid fashionable brand names. For instance, the frame is a Ribble scandium, 1kg and £300. An equivalent weight Scott/Trek etc. would cost probably 3 or 4 times that.

My SCR 2.0 is 8.5kg with bottle cage and computer
  • After reading this thread I weighed my bike for the first time. My XL carbon planet-x weighs about 9 kg with all the extras on it.

I rode it for the first time in a week today as I've been away  and as I pulled away I remembered just how light it really was!!

  • My winter spec commuter hits the scales at 10.60kg (23.4lbs) and the Ti 'best bike' weights in at a respectable 8.6kg (19.0lbs) - both with pedals and as ridden e.g. lights, mudguards etc on the winter bike and bugger all on the the other!

You sure? That seems pretty light for cheap (I don't mean that disrespectfully) bike with stock parts.

Hmmm - yes - I was thinking that - given that I have just spend the best part of two grand to try and get to that sort of weight.

no idea what Roubaix mkII will weigh-in at, but hopefully the good side of 8kg

Think the Prince weighs in at between 6.5 and 6.9kg. Just got some digital scales at home so I might have a weigh-in tonight.

Not sure there's much point weighiing my commuter given that the single panier normally weighs at least 10lbs (tools, reading, ipod, phone, some clothes, etc). In any case, it's all training isn't it?

  • New bike weighs in roughly 8kg. Some good wheels and a carbon stem and handlebars could probably see it down a bit less.
