New wheels advice

Ok, so I thinking of getting some new wheels for my carrera kraken that are as light as possible for xc, but still be strong enough for roots, jumps and any north shore I might find out on the trails. I can spend up to £130.
So far Ive found two choices
-xt disc hubs, dt spokes, dt 4.1 or 5.1 rim for £125(rotors for £5 extra)
-deore disc hubs, dt spokes, dt 4.1 or 5.1 for £99
Im not sure wether its worth it for the better hubs or what rim I should go for. the 4.1 is lighter, but 5.1 stronger. How strong is the 4.1?
Any other suggestions for wheels?

The XT hubs are lighter and will last linger than the Deore so if it was my money I'd get XT. Either rim will take XC and roots, after that it depends what you mean by North Shore and jumps.
4.1s are lighter, 5.1s stronger. I guess if you only jump to about 2ft, the 4.1s would be OK, any bigger go for the 5.1s."Internet Forums - an amazing world where outright falsehoods become cyber-facts with a few witty key taps and a carefully placed emoticon."0 -
Spend the extra on the XT, they are lighter and more durable - will last a lot longer. 4.1 is an XC rim, so if you want extra security, get the 5.1. Its not too much heavier, and build quality is important. Also take a peek at the mavic XM719 rim.0

Hello Georgeb
Where are you looking for the wheels? I fancy upgrading the wheels on my Giant bike!

Have a look at Merlin Cycles - great prices, great build quality.0

Really good build quality, I'm now on my third set, and even the 717 on deores, with dt comps have stood up to some hammer. In fact the other day I noticed i've bent a pair of steel rigids, but the wheels are still as true as when they arrived, even with the odd 2' drop and cycling the shortest distances i can.0

Yea, I was looking at merlin too.ride_whenever wrote:719 on xt hubs with dt comp spokes all in black from merlin.

Is this the xm719? Lighter than the 5.1 and almost as light as the 4.1
Is the xm 719 stronger then the 5.1?0 -
5.1 a bit heavier, and a bit wider. Strength wise, hard to say, build has so much influence on it. 719 seems to have the pedigree though.0

i've done 12' drops on XM719 from merlin. Also dj'd all summer on them and rode over a bmx.
Not a wobble, and I weigh 95kg....0 -
xm719's on xt are about £115 on crc so there a bit cheaper.
So what would you choose?
- the xm719 on xt for £115
- the 5.1 on xt for £125
I get the impression that the xm719s are plenty strong enough for what i'll be doing and there lighter.0 -
yes but the build quality is not as good so they will not last as well.
The build quality is much more important than the components when it comes to wheels, well within reason, as long as the parts are quality.
If you are going to get them, go with merlin or someone who makes really well done wheels, because you'll be much happier in the long run, and the difference in cost will be negligible.0 -
if you get from merlin which i'm just about to, get some 19mm velox rim cloth/tape from crc for the 719, should be easy to put on, gonna prolly get xt's on 719's with dt db black spokes.0

I'd look at the merlin rim tape, only costs a quid each wheel and, does the job, even if it is horrible and blue and plastic.0

I've just taken delivery of my xt/717's from Merlin. The build looks excellent. Not able to ride on them until tomorrow though.
They did send me the wrong colour shorts though!0 -
What other good places are there for wheelbuilding are there other than Merlin Cycles?0
-
only read good things from here http://www.wheelpro.co.uk/ but i have just taken delivery of a merlin build, xt hubs xm719 rims with dt db spokes and they are superb all the spokes go ting with no variation really chuffed with them much better quality build than my crc rear i got last summer, though that's still true it has some uneven spoke tensions to my amatuer eye.0
