Handlebar stem spacers

I want to set the height of my handlebar stem and I know spacers are available in 20, 10 and 5mm thicknesses. Is there a practical limit to either the number or total height of spacers I can use?

It's an aluminium Kinesis frame with an integrated headset and carbon steerer and I think I may need about 25/30mm lift, at least as a starter. I can always use fewer spacers and cut down the steerer later if I find I need the bars a bit lower.

I think about 5cm is the recommended maximum, but you maybe would be fine with more.

I think you get problems with the headset preload coming down quicker (headset compression? - I can't think of the proper terms) if you have too many spacers.

OK thanks for that RD. I'll get a small selection so that I can ring the changes.
