Is there a way to recycle old tyres?

I've been wondering... is there a way to recycle old tyres?
Or can they be re-used in some way? Like cut up for packing material. I dunno, that's why I'm asking. :oops:

I've seen shoes/sandals made from old tyres. Don't know where you'd go to actually re-cycle them though - ask your local council?

drop them into your local car tyre fitting shop they'll dispose of them through their recycling collection
