Whats the difference between a top swinging front mech and a conventional one? is there any performance difference?

Its where the band/clamp for the seat tube attatches - some frames may not have clearence for one type. There is a slight different in the spriong mechanism too, which some say makes conventional perfrom better.

and like wise stick with what is currently fitted as a change may not work. But common feeling is that the lower the band the better as it seems to make a stiffer mech.
