Due to a crash last year the tops of the levers have become scuffed quite badly. However I recently read somewhere that the 'name plate' ( which presumbly is the bit that I have scuffed) can be replaced. Not wanting necessary to by some new levers could anyone tell me if this is true?

    Regularly advertised on eBay, e.g.
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SHIMANO-ULTEGRA-6 ... dZViewItem
    - but if you Google around for George Hall Cycles you can find their shop website and they're cheaper going direct - no eBay fees I guess !

You'll need to find-out which model of shifter you have (ST-6600, ST-6510, ST-6500, etc) : if you roll back the rubber hood it's moulded/printed on the shifter itself

Retail price is £20/pair and ironically this is the bit that comes into contact with the ground if you upend the bike in a crash - not that I'm cynical about the motive to put expensive shiny bits that snap off at the merest touch of tarmac.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
