I have a double 53/39 with a SRAM 11-26 cassette, can I replace the cassette with a 11-32 to get more lower gears and if so will it make a noticeable difference on climbs.

not sure if SRAM road has capacity to go up to that many teeth..

you may be better off going to compact route if you need to go that low..

Will not an mtb rear mech do the job? Cheaper than going compact.

Do you ever use the 53x11? That's a 130" gear which is higher than we used racing the tandem. I admit we weren't super fast but a short 56 isn't too bad for a tourist.

I suggest you simply fit smaller chain rings. A compact or, IMO better, a triple. In any case you need to check what the capacity (ie total tooth difference) your rear mech can cope with as well as the largest sprocket which is probably nearer to 28 than 32 for road gear..
