Hello,
I'm looking to build up my old hardtail frame with some cheapish wheel/brake combo and i saw this deal on merlin...
http://www.merlincycles.co.uk/?fn=produ ... goryId=112
The deal is for hayes stroker ryde brakes and mavic117-deore wheel set.
The brakes seem okay and i've used deore hubs before, are the rims any good?
Anyone got any advice good/bad advice, ideas?
I've been looking on ebay for that elusive deal but people seem to be paying stupid money for 2nd hand brakes...madness!
Cheers!

Yeah, they're alright. Basic xc rims, but will be reasonably strong as they are built by merlin, just don't do any stupid drops on them.0

Depends which 117 rims - some are non eyeletted, and are not too hot. But still, for 140 quid for the lot?0

Do you really need discs? You'd probably be better off getting some nice disc ready wheels and v-brakes. 717/719 on xt hubs with avid v-brakes would be nice and less nickable.0

I know,cheapness!
Though sometimes you do wonder about what you aint getting, to good to be true and all that!0 -
Is the frame and fork you have disc compatible with mounts?0

The frame is an old saracen zen so its disc only, i know what you mean tho.0 -
Great frames, work well with a longer fork, and like being thrashed! If its harder riding you intend to do though, I'd opt for a tougher wheelset, but if its just a run around, then should be fine, and even with Vs as above.0

Awesome bikes and totally underated in my opinion i can't see why saracen and marin (b17) don't promote them better!
I've been hanging out for a set of SOS/singletracks or halo combats but as with everyting its down to the £'s!0 -
I remember having a go on the very first Zen that was released, when I worked at Halfords - geometry was something new, and the long travel hardtail was born. Very underrated! 719 rims are a happy medium - some other good offers on Merlin.0

719 are very tough from merlin. I landed a dj no feet (broke the saddle) then ran over a bmx and they were fine. they also landed several 12' drops.0

How were your balls though?!!!0

Hi, I've been looking at a 719/XT combo on Merlin but I note that they can take up to 8 days before they even send them out! I'm sure they are well made but does it really take them that long or are they just covering their backsides?0

Just large order volumes: are very good wheels! My two sets were a lot quicker than that though.0
-
Mine were quicker, and I busted the saddle with my leg, fortunately! Saddle was a total write off!0

Merlin make supreme wheels... cant fault mine. Ive got 719s on Pro2 Hubs.... nice! Did take a while, but they are handmade to order!0

Well I've ordered mine...717's with XT hubs...just hope they turn up before I head off for my MTB holiday in Spain! 8)0
