My cones are hiding from me...

i went to adjust the cones in my rear wheel last night and the driveside ones are hidden by the cassette, with only the locking nut being acessable. Do i need to remove the cassette if i want to properly adjust the cones? If that's the case then it's a pretty crap design.

I had to bodge it yesterday and jam the cone with a screwdriver while i did the locking nut up...

The hub is shimano. probably.

they should protrude enough to use a cone spanner on... Bit odd that.

yes you do need to remove the cassette.

    try reading parktools.

well the q/r will clamp it all together until i next remove the wheel, and besides, i don't have a cassette removal tool small enough

i'll have a read of parktools anyway. Cheers.

If it's a simple cup and cone hub (like Shimano), you don't need to remove the cassette, just adjust the other side.

unless it is the cassette side that the lock ring has come loose on. ;)

Sorry, what's come loose? I thought the problem was just adjusting bearing play.

the problem is adjusting play, but i was trying to tighten the cone that you can't get to without removing the cassette.

''well the q/r will clamp it all together'' - I meant that now i've bodged it, the q/r will clamp the whole thing and make sure the lock ring doesn't come undone. Until i next remove the wheel and the lock ring will probably come loose, becuase i couldn't tighten it too hard as i couldn't really get any purchase on the cone with a screwdriver...

Nicklouse you seem to know your stuff, if the FSA pig pro dh a good choice for 'aggressive' xc?

That's my point, you don't have to adjust that cone. Adjusting either takes up the play in both bearings exactly the same.
