My regime as follows, depending upon season...

    Hot Weather
    UnderArmour Heatgear long-sleeved top
    Bib shorts
Baggy shorts (Sombrios or cut-off suprlus combat pants)
    Moto-style jersey or t-shirt
    Thin cotton socks

    Mild Weather
As above, but possibly swap the shorts for 3/4 length "knickers" depending on temperature.
    Loop pile cotton socks

    Autumn cold
    Bib shorts
    Helly Hansen Lifa long-sleeved top
    Bib Tights
    Baggy shorts
    Moto-style jersey
    Lightweight wind and waterproof layer
    Thin cotton socks
    Sealskinz Mid Lights

    Winter Cold
    Bib shorts
    Thermal leggings
    Helly Hansen Lifa long-sleeved top
    Bib Tights
    Baggy shorts
    Micro-fleece jacket
Mid or heavy-weight wind and waterproof layer
    Loop pile wool mix socks
Sealskinz Mid Lights and larger shoes (1/2 size up)

Even in winter I usually just wear long sleeved base layer, short-sleeved jersey and gilet.

Perhaps with a thin waterproof in the rain.

Oh, and long tights with shorts under/over depending on lycra/baggy preference.

Usual advice is you should feel just a bit too chilly when you start off, and you'll soon warm up to a comfy level.

I generally wear as little as possible, carry some extra layers. The cold just encourages you to cycle harder, you just have to be quite on the ball about changing...

    In the winter;

    Long sleeved jersey (MT500)
Gill Freedom Jacket when it gets below about 4C (otherwise the jersey is fine by itself) but usually have to take this off once warmed up after 15-20 mins
    Helly Hensen base tights
    Bib tights (full length)
    Shorts
    Winter Sealskinz gloves
    Med Thermal Sealskinz socks

    Thats it.

I keep it basic. Generally use the same base layer and outer layer for all rides, just change the mid layer for tempertaure differences. Base layer must be wicking, top layer breathable, waterproof and windproof. Insummer may just wear the base layer on its own, or a football shirt. Might ignore the mid layer completely on a wet warm day. I use Nike DRi Fit bottoms.

Perfect, if its too cold to be out in clothes like that I generally don't go out.

None of theses fancy clothes for me.

In the summer I was wearing a pair of Endura Humvee shorts (now ditched cos the waist band is kinda weird) and a cycling jersey from halfords or a T-Shirt when it was proper warm, nike sport socks & skate shoes.

During the winter including proper frozen ground barely getting above zero trip to Llandegla I wore Fox High Frequency shorts, a trespass short sleeved base layer and a Aldi Winter bike jacket, seal skinz mid-light & shimano MT41 SPD shoes.

Both topped of with Sixsix One Gloves.

I did read in MRUK that it's best to dress so you're near to proper cold/shivering almost when you start and after 10-15mins you'll be upto a nice winter operating temperature.

Don't forget to take a warm jacket/hoodie and a beanie/wooly hat for post ride grub if you're stopping off at a cafe/riding centre at the end of yer ride.
  • Down here in "Sunny" Wales ive been wearing, a Short Sleeved base layer, Endura Singletrack Shorts, Sombrio Short Sleeved Jersey, Thor Gloves, Raceface Knee/Leg pads, and a stinky pair of old DC shoes. Like Steve_b77 said, I am shivering as I leave the house... but 10 minutes down the road I feel fine. It has been proper cold down here too! I would say just try some combos and see what works for you.

    Good Luck

On all but the very coldest days, my Altura jacket (Nevis) with a long arm polyprop vest works fine. Also have some Altura wind/waterproof gloves (about the best £30 I have spent) and wear shorts in anything over 12 degrees C, or some Nike trousers (tightish but not cycle specific) under that. Have waterproof trousers too but I prefer not to use them if possible (they slip down at the back!) and overboots for if it's REALLY wet.

Never ever feel uncomfortable with that lot.

Summer time it's boardshorts, a T shirt, cycle gloves and a big smile. :D
