problem with rear hub/cassette

Hi, I've just replaced the cassette and chain on my old MTB. Swapping a worn out shimano 8 speed cassette with a shiny new one, new chain fitted and all looked very nice and shiny. I then went through the gear changes and that was ok, so I stopped turning the pedals, naturally the wheel kept spinning and then suddenly the cassette started to jerk forward and back as if being pulled by the wheel a bit, causing the chain to slacken quite a bit. Didn't happen before. The rear hub is not qucik release by the way but a solid axle(wheel was originally set up for single speed).
Any idea whats happening?

Sounds like your freehub has coincidentally partially seized.
