Crunchingly tight cones on factory built wheels.
Over the past eighteen months I have bought brand new (not all for myself!) a Scott AFD, 3 Dahon Cadenzas and two Carrera Crakens.
What has shocked me is that on all these bikes the cones of the wheel axles have been crunchingly tight. A quick tweak has sorted them out to what I know from experience is a smooth firm action. I am sure that damage would have occured to the races and surfaces had I not sorted them.
I know the wheels are not high quality but this is a simple thing that goes for any wheel.
Why is this? Am I missing something or is this just poor factory wheel set up?
Has anyone else found the same?
Ted

I chacked out someones new bike shaped thing they bought from Tesco for £40. Cones were loose against the locknuts, but still tight against the bearings. Quick check and adjust all is well.
p.s. for £40 some bits are OK (alloy rims), rubbish gearsRecipe: shave legs sparingly, rub in embrocation and drizzle with freshly squeezed baby oil.0
