Upon my return to the shropshire hills this summer, i will be looking for an XC bike. I've done some demo's and settled firmly (last year) on the giant trance.

There are 3 options ranging from the trance 1 at about £2k, down to the trance 3 at about £900. The spec on the trance 3 leaves a lot to be desired, yet the spec on the trance 1 is still not what i want.

Would you either

a> buy the cheaper one and spend a lot of time and money improving it
b> buy the more expensive one and settle for the parts that are 'nearlly' what you want but not quite?

The other consideration is the new trance X, which appears lighter with another inch of travel. but i'm unsure about the value of that. I do want an XC bike - not a trail bike

The frames with the Trance range are identical - the Trance 1 has the same frame as the Trance 3

The parts on the higher spec bike will (theoretically) last longer so that would give you more time to decide what you do and don't like.

dont fanny about, bite the bullet and get the trance advanced, stupidly priced, maybe, but the best bike I have ever bought.

depends how much you would change really I would say, its always best to have the nicest kit but pointless paying a premium if you are going to take most of it off anyway. Factor in the changes to the cost totals and base it all on that.
