I just noticed this evening that the back wheel of my Giant M1 is fracturing below 4 of the spoke holes in the rim.

The damage looks like this http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2259/2210504176_1477ef1416_o.jpg

The bike is a week short of 12 months old and is my daily commuter.

I've emailed Giant and advised them of the problem, what do you think is the chance of me getting a replacement wheel under warranty?

If they don't supply me with one can anyone recommend a good quality very strong wheel to replace the slowly collapsing Alexrims ACE-18 doublewall 559x17 6061h-T6? It has a disk break fitted if that makes any difference!!

Thanks in advance.

Cor, you're not riding it like that are you?

I've got an alexrim the my back wheel of my GT (had one on the front but a car door collided with it, and I replaced it with a mavic), but I'm getting a spare built for the day it breaks up.

You'd probably be better off asking in the MTB forum.

Unless they are aware of a fault with that rim, i think your chances are slim. Wheels are wear and tear items, so unless the rest of the bike is absolutely mint (so you could argue very little use) then i wouldn't expect a new one.

Remember that a warranty covers manufacturing defects, not breakages.

    strong rims?

Mavic EX721's or the disk only version,

it was the standard answer on the old mbuk forum and both sets of my specially built mountain bike wheels were built using them, lasts a year without needing to be trued

Well after my rim failure and only a week left of warranty I wasn't expecting any joy from Giant...

But... I had an instant response to my email, was told not to ride the bike and to take it back to my lbs for a check over and for them to ring Giant.

My lbs called Giant with a report on the state of the rim, Giant despatched a new rim and paid the lbs for spokes and the cost of him to rebuild the wheel.

Now that's what I call excellent customer service.

Well done Giant, other bike companies need to take note!

Makes me feel better about my planned SCR purchase :D

Got a test ride of a TCR all weekend from Switchback Cycles to see how I get on with road bikes.

  • Bloody hell... Do you not feel abit dodgy riding with that kind of damage? Don't jump off any walls or up on cars on your way to work will you...

As for a decent wheel, your best bet is chain reaction cycles.

They're fast with free postage, aswell as decent and reasonably priced stock.

I'm glad Giant sorted Stuww, they did the right thing. Barring abuse, rim failure in this way has got to be either a rim fault or more likely a build fault, and as such should be replaced by LBS as vendor - Giant stepping in with warranty support is a bonus, but is seperate from statutory rights.
