Right lovin' my new bike and went and got very mucky at the weekend at Swinley Forrest.

I've never had discs brakes before but as soon as they got a bit mucky they just grated and squeaked proper noisy Did some tricky down hill but even with a lot of breaking they didn't self clean.

Is this what discs brakes do? if so give me back my old canti's

Its a 08 Rockhopper disc with Avid juicy 3' btw

  • Sounds like they're bedding in! Keep with them, should improve...

  • Sqeaky might be bedding in granted, but I've just looked and the pads are a gnats pubic hair from the rotor so very little clearence if the rotors get the slightest grit.

Is this normal, would have thought at least a mil each side.?

Is the caliper properly aligned? I am guessing it is: just a case of bedding them in, they usually settle down.

Tiger - I had problems with my Juicy 5s for 4 months!
They FINALLY bedded in (with bike shop help) and are now brilliant.

My wife has just got a Rockhopper like yours and hers bedded in immediately.

Both very slightly squeak at times but they are SO much better than my old Avid V brakes now.

i fond that my 5s grind and squeak after going through a load of crap for a couple of stops then clear up again when im through the section. They always maintain power though.

my juicy 7's sound like a box of pi$$ed off seagulls when braking, they are only a couple of weeks old and not bedded in propperly yet. Give it a few rides see how they go.

I've found that water or wet disc's and/or pads squel too - quite humerous when there are a few of you coming to stop at the end of a section or tea hut, pub, everyone looks round, lol

my jusicys sqeal wehn wet, and 'grate' when riding through wet/muddy sections. it doesnt affect pads/rotors though adn still maintain power. they usually quieten down once theyve been used too. scrubs the skank off.
I said hit the brakes not the tree!!

My juicy 5's for Stumpy have grinded since first bought, juicy 5's for enduro have just started to grind. Always squeal when wet!

Sounds like we all suffer from the "Avid mating call" ;) Mine were noisy as hell for about 4 months. I got new pads (EBC Green) and they were quiet as anything :D Then i cleaned the bike and they started off again :S Grease on the pads does you no favours at all. Next time i clean my bike properly i think i'll take the wheels off and pads out
