Crankset upgrade/ Giant XTC LX

I'm looking for a replacement crankset for my Giant XTC LX.
It currently has the stock TruVativ crankset but the middle ring is quite bent/warped so thought it would be a good time to upgrade.
Don't want to spend a fortune, would £50 buy a good replacement??

What bottom bracket do you have? That will limit chocie, unless you get a new one.
I'd look at the Octalink LX from CRC and BB.0 -
good question, I'm a bit of a novice so not entirely sure. From the spec list it says Shimano but doesn't say which model.
I could allways replace it though.0 -
How about http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=7251? £60 and you'd need to get someone to fit it, including facing the BB shell, but should be a really decent upgrade...

At this price,a complete Shimano Deore or even Deore Hollowtech 2 LX chainset would be hard to beat.2006 Giant XTC

cheers for posting the options guys, how hard would it be to fit a new set myself and would i need any special tools??0

Crank extractor (unless your cranks are self extracting), 8mm allen key (maybe 10, depending on the bolts) and bottom bracket tool.
If fitting an external bottom bracket type, a preloaod tool for the bearings - thoogh I'd get a shop to do it as the frame will need 'facing'.0 -
are there any benefits with octalink over a non octalink ht2?0

I would say better bearing life over stock HT2 models. Though it is getting better with HT2, and upgrades are available on stock HT2 BBs.0

My LBS charged £15 to face, and install my HT2 XT chainset.Similar to the cost of acquiring the tools.............2006 Giant XTC

To be honest i'd rather fit it myself as I like to get my hands dirty and see how the thing actually works so I'll try and get hold of the tools.
If I wanted to keep my BB which cranksets could I go for??0 -

If you can find a facing tool for £15, please post a link...

Indeed, i would love one of those for 15 smackers to.0 -
well it will cost a bit extra than an lbs fitting charge when you include the cost of a torque wrench and a bit set for tightening up the crank arm pinch bolts, but that would be a good tool to get for doing other bolts on your bike properly in the future. something like this is'nt too expensive,
torque wrench 2-24 Nm
