Hey all.

This coming summer i really need to get my hands on a new frame as my old hardtail is old and very worn.

I've got about £300ish to spend, purhaps a little more. I'm thinking that getting a good hardtail frame is better than a cheap FS.

I'm leaning towards something in steel, but any suggestions are very welcome.
Look forward to hearing from you.

Mike

    In steel: Rock Lobster 853
In Alu: Rock Lobster Team SL

Both great value, light, and show what can be performed with each material.

Too much consideration given to the material IMO - a good frame's a good frame.

What fork travel are you looking at?

I've heard a lot of hype about steel which i never would have considered before.
I guess you've got a good point though.

Is the On One Scandal 26" frame any good? I've only seen reviews for people riding 29"

I really really like my scandal, very light, good handling, will take a 4-5" fork.

If you want steel On-one do the inbred, in various geared or singlespeed forms
(the scandal is essentially a scandium geared inbred), or the 456, which will take anything from 4-6" on the front.

  • If your on the small side this is a fantastic buy - don't get many deals like this around:

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Marin-2006-Attack ... otohosting

If your up to 5'8 it should be spot on - fantastic condition!

BTW - this isn't mine or anything - stumbled across it last night!

    Far too small for me....

This is where you'll prob tell me you're 6' 2"

    Look at:

Steel - Charge Duster, Cove Handob, On-One Inbred (not the 456), Handsome Dog Arrow

Ali - Kinesis Maxlight XC2, Merlin Malt various models, On One Scandal

Not surprised at that price!

Generally speaking, for frames designed for XC and trail riding, steel frames are built to have a little spring in the ride character, while alu frames are stiffer and lighter. I say generally as its possible to build flexy alu frames and monstrously stiff steel ones - it all depends on the construction.
  • Ah, well this is the thing. I don't really know if i want stiff or springy.
Interestingly i have played with the idea of saving up for a Slingshot Ripper frame. Best (or maybe worst) of both worlds.

Hmmm, not sure, thats a bit different, and would definitely need a test first!

Cove Handjob has already been mentioned, but I'll second it, and also add Orange P7.
