are you supposed to use proper crimping pliers to fit cable end crimps - how do they work?
I just ended up crushing them on with normal pliers (with some force) but intuition tells me this isnt correct! :?

  • You can use anything really as long as you apply just enough force. Believe it or not I used to use my side cutters with just enough force not to cut through the nipple

As awe inspring and profound as I'm sure that's meant to be..it isn't. That's a load of tosh. Although professional tools help, all you need for the professional finish is a careful touch and a bit of common sense.

By what you just said my cassette should be knackered because I don't use a Park tool chain whip - I use a old chain and steel rod instead. works just fine for me. Oh and i used to be a "professional" aswell 8)

My cable cutters have a crimping "section" underneath the cutting part. As others have said though, you can make do with pilers.

Had too many bad experiences with side cutters to try that again

Ditto, never a frayed cable since I bought them.
