Hub gears and disc brakes questions

Sorry more questions
Why don't any road bikes seem to have disc brakes?
Can hub gears be used with a derailler front sprocket set up?
Can a Giant SCR (Or similar) be converted to a hub gear and disc brakes...or is there a road bike that already has this?

People don't use discs on road bikes (usually) because they're too much of a good thing- all that power on those little tyres means a lot of locking and skidding, which is no good. If you run fat enough tyres, then maybe. I never would- they have the advantage of the pads lasting a lot longer, but I'd use a fixie if you're worried about that.
As for hub gears- no real reason why you'd need to run them with a front sprocket, is there? You could, but they tend to have a wider ranger than most derailleurs and work fine. I run a Rohloff and that's perfect, but a bit costly for a commuter.
You can run a hub gear on any road bike, and in theory you could run discs with an adaptor, but I don't think road frames are strong enough to handle the forces.0 -
Thanks for clearing up the braking issue, makes a lot of sense!
How has your experience of hub gears been? Am I correct in assuming they are less maintenance and more reliable than dérailleur gears?2007 Giant SCR2 - 'BFG'

TBH, the next time I get a commuting bike, a bike like the Focus would be ideal. Good for towpaths and roads. I'm back at Uni next year so there'll be no more cycle commuting for me for a while, otherwise I'd snap one up now.0 -
Does that have mounting points for mudguards and panniers?
I accept I may be being too particular now2007 Giant SCR2 - 'BFG'

I've only had that rolf harris since July.
I've not touched it- no new cables, no nothing. I ride it 3 or 4 times a week off road, go to the freeride park on it, the skate park, dh courses, xc races. It's never missed a beat, and I'll never go back to derailleurs for anything except road riding (except commuting) and xc racing.0 -
By non-commuting road riding I guess you mean racing?! Or are there significant losses with a hub? I won't be racing but I do plan on eventually doing day long journeys of some mileage.

There is a small loss, but I use it for 24 hour races and long hauls because I know for certain it won't break!0
