How can I make my commuter last?

I've got a singlespeed, singlebraked commuter (if anyone can tell me where to buy some ultra cheap fixed hubs, I'd appreciate that), I want to make it last longer.

It gets used day in, day out, and lives outside. There's no option for me to keep it inside at home. It's got a steel frame, steel bites and I'm trying to make bits on it last a long time.

With it being so simple, there's not a lot to break, but the chain gets very rusty very quickly. Is there any road grime proof lube that I can use that's really cheap and not too naff? Just plain old GT85 should do on a singlespeed chain, shouldn't it?

I'm also having an issue with the front brake. It had some really old cabling on (it's got a sort of coiled spring in it, but no liner) and the brake just wouldn't work. I swapped the pads, and it still wouldn't work. It was like the pads just didn't want to bite the rim, just let it slip through, regardless of how tight they were. New outer cable, and all of a sudden they work again. How can I stop this happening again? Anyone recommend cable oilers for this job?

The sprocket (a 6 quid one from the LBS) and chainring (Dura Ace) look rusty and sorry for themselves- will this cause problems till I make it fixed?

Cheers.

Clean your chain regularly and put some of this oil

Good maintenance will make your bike last longer but being a steel frame and using in wet weather and keeping it outside will not help.... something to read about steel frames and rust
