8 speed cassette on 9 speed hub?

No you don't need a spacer.
8 and 9 speed cassettes use the same size freehub body.

i'm wanting to get a new rear wheel off ebay foir the missus her bike is an 8 speed and the one im looking at has a 9 spd cassette on there now. will i need a new shifter then? im so confused thanxI'm not dumb. I just have a command of thoroughly useless information0

you could just remove the caseete and fit the one that is on her wheel now.
If you wish to leave the cassette on the "new" wheel you will need new shifter and new chain. Minimum."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."
