Hi there
I am looking for all the help I can get to get my 90kg over the peaks of the etape.
As it says above low profile neutron ultras, or the deeper Eurus?
Will one be much more comfortable?
Thanks

I would guess (and I am guessing) that the lower profile Nuetrons will be comfier as I would imagine that the rim would have more 'give' in it...

    but I am guessing

they are about the same price, (£360 from ribble) I think that the neutrons are a little lighter too

    Neutron Ultras all the way.

    (But I would say that)

I too had to decide between Eurus and the Neutron Ultras, and the NUs won.

Magnus Backstedt won Paris-Roubaix on a set of Neutrons, so can't be too bad.

    1. try and lose weight. every kilo shed before hand is going to be more help than wheels.
    2. if you haven't been to the Alps try and get out for a weekend to practice so you know what to expect
    3. Neutrons are the ones I use out there as they are more climb-specific.

i would either go for neutrons or a pair of handbuilts
OP Ceramic ( better braking ) on either DA/DT or tune hubs..

can be built for YOU then ..experienced wheelbuilder will get correct spoke pattern & spokes for your weight/riding style..

plus if you have a problem ...spokes & rims are easy to come by ...

A guy I know who lives in the Alps has a pair of Ceramic OP on 32 hole DA hubs and really rates them. he has access to a lot of nice kit as he works with Sigma and Cyclefit and his customers have LightWeight etc. But for general riding and esp in wet weather those OP rims come into their own.

agreed ...i have a pair of OP Ceramics on TUNE HUBS / CX ray spokes..they are lighter than a pair of ES's & stiffer laterally...braking with green swisstop pads is like an F1 car

built by Tim at Echelon who has just been "bigged up" in a seperate thread ....

As you are heavy the deep rim aero wheel may actually help a bit by not flexing (if you have a sensible number of spokes) - not saying the neutorns do flex, just a general comment on deep vs shallow rims.
If you are going to be riding with mates, I wouldn't worry about aero at all as you can share the wind braking based on ability. If on your own, it could make a small difference to have aeros. It ain't going to be the difference between finishing and not finishing though - that's down to you ;)
  • I was in the same situation as you a year ago, contemplating a terrifying etape, at 95kg, post Christmas. I did the miles, bought the kit (DO get a compact) and got down to about 87kg, and was still punished cruelly on the day for the years of beer and bad genes. As above, lose the man meat and you may enjoy the day. I didn't.

To answer your question, I'd go NU.
  • I can help out a bit as I'm 86 kgs and had exactly the same dilema before last year's GF Campagnolo. I've run Neutrons on the past 4 occasions but elected for Eurus last year. For comfort it's a no brainer, the Neutrons win everytime and they certainly climb better due to lower rim weight. I may go uphill like truck but I decend like one too and if you notice any adverse flex in the bends, its your forks not the Neutrons.
Bottom line is, unless you are worried about the sprint for 2544th place, use the Neutrons. If its vital you beat the man in front, the Eurus may give you the edge.
