I'm wanting to buy a mountain bike for a maximum of £500.

I'm intending to ride on the road and single trails on the weekend ( i'm not intending to do anything to rough)

I've had a look around and i'm looking at the Scott Aspect 45 plus GT Avalanche 1.0
but still open to suggestions.

Please help.

Both well specced - can you try them out? Will give you an idea of performance, but more importantly, fit.

If you're over 6 ft tall you can get a brand new Zaskar from CRC for £549.

I'm tempted again, just need to see how much last years bonus is going to be

Focus seem to be getting good reviews at the moment, can't remember the name o their £500 jobby, but it will be well specced.

And of course there's always a Carrera from Halfords.
Visit Clacton during the School holidays - it's like a never ending freak show.

    Who are you calling inbred?
  • Thanx for replies.

I,ve been in today. Tried both bikes. GT Feels better, also a better fit.

I.ve heard the SF forks on the GT aren't that good. I understand you get what you pay for
but are they worth the money ???

Should i look at another bike with a better fork ?

Its a decent fork - not like the budget suntours. This GT got best on test in WMB, the best 500 quid bike they had ever tested.
  • check out the classifieds section, I have a brand new, never ridden, 2008 Merlin Malt 1 with upgraded wheels and fork for sale, I'm after near the sort of money you are looking to spend...
  • Just when i decided on the GT.
A local store has offered a Specialized Rockhopper Disc 2008 for £520.
I tried it out, feels good.

Seems to good to pass away !!!

    You think

Thats a great deal on a superb bike! I'd have that over the GT, provided it fit.

Rockhopper definitely. Even Sonic would break his brand allegience for it, so thats saying something!
  • I've had the GT for about 2 months now, and fucking love it! It is my first real bike, so I might not be the best judge in the world, but still...... Only downside with it though is that I am having problems with the brakes, they were good when I first got it, but now they have beded in they feel spongey as, well a sponge actually!!
