Valve extender - how on earth does it work?
Hi,
This is potentially an embarrassing question but here goes...
Today I got my first ever tubular tyre to go on my first ever CF tubular wheel. The rim is 50mm deep and the tyre came with a valve extender. The valve extender has a thread inside it, which suggested that it somehow screws onto the valve. However the threads don't seem to match (i.e. it won't screw on). This made me think that maybe the valve extender isn't meant to screw onto the valve.
Can anyone help me to understand what's going on? Google hasn't helped me, and this otherwise ace video doesn't go into it. One link from Google made me think that I need something called plumber's tape...
Any and all posts will be very greatly appreciated!
Cheers,
Andy

PTFE tape (plumber's tape) will still require the threads to be the same. The tape just helps to seal any gaps in the threads (I guess in this case - airtight), and helps to stop the threads seizing up by corrosion.
It's a bit wierd that the threads aren't the same?0 -
Sounds like the extender is the type where you need to take the valve core out.
So... take the valve core out, screw in the extender and then re-fit the core in to the extender.
This type is far better then the tube type that just screws over the core. There have a been a few threads about this in the past so might be worth a search.
EDIT: You shouldn't need any PTFE tape if it is the core replacement type extender as these usually have rubber seal on the tread that goes in to the valve.

Whoopsie got it now - embarassingly straightforward!0
