What a show that was. Seriously, I think they should bring it back. It must have inspired people to go do some sport I'd have thought. There's nothing like it on TV anymore.

I liked Wolfman and Saracen...and Jet of course! And '2 Scoops', what a guy!

Awooooga!

If all activities that involved people who took drugs were banned off TV like cycling seems to get, don't think there's much chance as I seem to remember that ol' Wolfie's muscles weren't all down to just hard work and effort!

Have to admit though, did used to watch it only to see Jet, think I'll have to go off for a quick google!

did anyone try to recreate gladiators in their lounge at uni? great fun.

I would have decked Jet - really :) I think any of those gladiators (possibly even the blokes!! - well, maybe not) wouldn't have stood a chance if I was running at them full pelt. I really would have liked to try Rugby for that reason but Rugby for girls hadn't really got into full swing yet.

It has just been revived in the US. After airing a couple of episodes they already announced that there will be a second season.

The new version is hosted by Hulk Hogan (who does a reasonable job) and a woman I've not seen before. The Gladiators include female MMA fighter Gina Carano.

If the US version continues to pull in the ratings I wouldn't be surprised to see it return here too.

Our lad stumbled across repeats of this on Challenge TV and loved it (he wasn't about when the originals aired, we had to put it on series record because it finished after his bed time). He also loves repeats of the Krypton Factor!

On the strength of the Gladiators, I think they were pretty tough. One of my mates was in a gym in Birmingham and Wolf was working out. He was doing an exercise with his hands on his back near his waist, flicking a weight up with just a couple of fingers. He asked my mate if he could hold the wieght for a second, while he changed positions....... my mate took it off him and nearly ended up pulled through the floor he said it was that heavy!!

There was a thread about this a few months ago, has anyone seen Ninja Warrior? The challenges there take some real strength!

Not too late to start playing womens rugby is it Popette?

We used to watch Gladiators religiously at uni and would spend many a long night discussing who would be the perfect lineup for Gauntlet! I think mine was Rhino >> Wolf >> Hunter >> Saracen. lol. Great days.

Gauntlet - that was the one I would have liked to try out. That, and the bashing the opponent with the padded stick. Yehhhhhhhh!!

    Yes, it's too late - I'm 33 now :)

I hope you're joking! Thats not too late. Go give it a go if you fancy it.

You mean Duel! Great game. Shadow was the master at that til he got busted for steroid use! haha...as if noone could tell!

I don't think my knees would thank me for it. Besides, I only started cycling last year and I'm far too passionate about that to start another sport.
  • I used to work with a lass who took part in Gladiators, she was a European Drug-Free 70Kg Power Lifting" Champion, talk about strong. She was the only competitor I can remember who managed to hold onto those rings with one of the Gladiators hanging onto her.
Wasn't it "Rhino" who was thrown off the show for steroid abuse? I remember one of them getting chopped.
It was fun to watch, true pantomime with Wolf as the naughty boy. Anyone else remember him is some crappy film with Glenda Jackson? They wound up in a wicker box together, IIRC.
Remember that you are an Englishman and thus have won first prize in the lottery of life.

    Hmm...

Not all bad, but I seem to think I may have been far more interested as a teenager!

I liked Jet - she did the warm-up when I ran the Great North Run in 1996 - got me warmed up anyway :D

A repeat of that show now wouldn't get passed the Health & Safety mob...

What do I ride? Now that's an Enigma!

I don't know. Health and Safety was alive and kicking back in the mid nineties aswell wasn't it? I always used to cringe when they fell off the rings on Hang Tough though. If I was falling from that height I wouldn't want a 20 stone guy wrapped around me even if I was falling onto a crash mat. There must have scope for all kinds of injuries there.

thought I knew something about it, but turns out my knowledge was wrong so I've deleted what I said!!

It was about one of the gladiators sons being in So Solid Crew!

Ah, happy memories! Who was the lady-Gladiator who had the devastating 'leg scissors' move on 'Hang Tough'? It was quite a sight. Especially to an impressionable pre-pubescent boy...

That's the one, Lightning. Anyone remember the stunning mullet* sported by Falcon?

Christ i hated that programme, just complete crap! None of the women had breasts as far as I can recall. I mean, what good's that?

There was some sort of documentary on steroid abuse in gyms and there was some fairly incriminating evidence on 'Wolf' that was stirred up. It's highly unlikely that any of the guys on the programme could bulk-up like that without resorting to hormone abuse. I knew someone who was on the original series - because he succeeded in winding-up the Gladiators, they all picked on him and the other guy had a free run to win - mind you he was a bloke called Tracey!
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
