Disc rotors

What're the options on replacing stock rotors?
I have HFX9s which work fine (er,finally) but I keep seeing these lighter/pimpier rotors.
Dirtydog and Gusset to name two.
Are they universal i.e. work with any brake?

Also,are there any brake manufacturers rotors that work fine with other brakes,and are there any definite no-nos?

Also thinking of changing to Hayes Stroker Trails (purely for the pimpy white option :oops: ) but apparently they have larger pads,so do they need a special rotor?

If anyone could list manufacturers rotors that do not work with other brakes that'd be a big help...or list ones that do :lol:

    I have Hayes HFX 9 calipers and levers, but I have 203mm A2Z Teppan Yaki discs front and rear.

    As long as the following can be met -

    Calipers can be aligned with rotors;
    Calipers wide enough to accept rotors, and;
    Calipers compatible with (or can be made compatible with) rotor diameter;

    really there is no reason not to mix-and match.

    Just to confuse things, some manufacturers measure discs in inches, others in millimetres. As a rough guide, 6" = 150mm (152mm); 7" = 175mm (180mm); and 8" = 200mm (203mm).

    It's worse than that, there are different friction surface sizes. For example mono minis are quite small, HFX9s are quite big. Use Hope rotors on HFX9s and the pads wear the rotor spokes.

    Even worse, the sizes are nominal in some cases. IIRC if you measure 6" Hayes rotors, far from finding them as 6", you will find they are 160mm.

    So be careful if considering rotors from another brake, but most aftermarket rotors (A2Z, Imperial) work with most calipers.

  • Thanks fellas,trial and error seems to be the way to go :wink:

    I was just worried that there may be certain combinations that without a doubt do not work...the Hope mini rotors being a fine example.

    Now if I could just get my own design cut...

    Hope used to do custom discs, why not ask them if they still could? The discs are laser cut - if you can give them a DWG or DXF format drawing you vistually eliminate the setup charge so it shouldn't be too expensive.

    If you have a design but no means of drawing it just tip me the wink and I can do the drawing for you.

    Thanks for the suggestion,but they are the 'Reginald' of the disc rotor world :lol:

    I remember Hope doing the custom thing. Presumably the demand wasn't there...?
