Rapid Rise Rear Mech

hi all,

Been thinking of putting a MTB rear mech on my road bike, and noticed there are these rapid rise rear mechs, that rely on spring tension rather than cable tension to shift up or something (not sure exactly what)

my question is, will these work with standard shimano road shifters or do you need something special?

Thanks

Will

Yes they will. Its the samecable pull but backwards. A bit difficult at first, and not really necessary for road to me, but a good idea. I use it for mtb and i love it. Much easier to shift on the uphill bits as youre not pushing the spring on the rear mech but its retracting of its own accord.

Watch out. These work back to front. I got one by mistake and couldn't work out what to do to change gear when in a hurry.

To add to what I mentioned on another thread - might be of some use - I've currently got on my Road bike:

Shimano 2200 - 8-speed STI shifters - (one lower than the Sora group)
    Shimano Altus - Rear mech (takes up to a 34T sprocket - I use a 32T)
    Shimano HG-40 - 8-speed cassette

Works great - Altus is dirt cheap though (£7 on Ebay) - you could get something better than this that still fits in though.
  • One of my many bikes is rapid rise. At first I liked it... I find it's generally better for MTB use, until you come to use any other MTB that is.

If you have several bikes, it just becomes too confusing. For that reason, I now loathe the idea until it becomes standard across the board (which it obviously never will).

I have since put the RD on one of my hire bikes, and most people tend not to like it... also people don't much care for last years' integrated shift/brake lever model.

I was sold one by my LBS - didn't even think to ask what type of rear mech it was - and it does my head in. I've had it since last summer and just I can't get used to it. I have to think every time I change gear and I always shift the wrong way so end up having to shift back twice to get the gear I want. Also, when it's really clogged with mud it doesn't work as well as a normal rear mech. My advice is not stick with what you know. I'll be replacing mine this year.
I'm only concerned with looking concerned

well in some respects it would suit me, as i have the sora leavers that unlike the compag ones i can't get to the inner button to change up to a harder gear... which when im on the drops powering along is anoying so a rapid rise rear mech would be handy in that respect!

However the main reason i was looking to change it is becuase i wanted to put a larger rear cassettte on, but just got a 11-32T and my current mech deals with it fine, like what the hell!
