I've had a cold now since just after new year, and it won't go away. Anybody else suffering. I'm wondering what cures you may have tried that I've not.

I'm tempted by a duvet day, but I don't feel that ill, just bunged up nose.

"I've had a cold now since just after new year..."

Me too an' all! First since I gave up the drink and started cycling regularly in May 2003. Put it down to being first winter since then that I have NOT been out pedalling nearly every day whatever the weather. Just about gone now. Only remedy I've tried (don't do the whisky and hot lemon any more!) is a Beechams and early to bed.

    Get well soon!

Perhaps next year I'll take the Doc's offer of flu jab ("at your age, with your lungs....you really should consider it...").

I was told recently that a fever occurs to kill off bugs by raising the temperature to a level that the bugs don't like. I got to thinking and concluded that an hour or so in a sauna (or very hot bath) a curry and an evening infront of the fire sipping hot lemon and ginger might cure you in record time. Am I right?!

...plus a good session with your Dyson/maid/carpet beater...

...seriously, I think there is some truth in the "sweat it out" school of thought

dont know if it'll work but sounds a good way to spend a dark evening.

I seem to have a nice dose of bronchitis at the minute which is starting to really pi55 me off - which is a pity as according to Wikipedia, I've probably got another 10-20 days of it yet. :x

Not sure if I should carry on riding regardless - did 5 hours Saturday, which didn't seem too bad but left me shagged, although probably no more than usual. Think I'll steer clear of the "lung-buster" sessions until it clears up though.

Being positive, I do sound a bit like Barry White at the minute........which is nice! Well, either that or a heavy-breathing perv crossed with a Dalek. "All you lovely ladies...........come on and feeeeeeeeeel my luuuuuuuuuuuuuurve for ya!"
  • I agree with the hot bath and sauna suggestion does the trick with me.
Also green tea with echinacea, tastes not to good so I tend to let it cool and gulp it. I had a cold starting sunday night so drank lots of this stuff and plenty of water and the cold gave up and went home.

me too - i haven't ridden my bike yet this year!!

it's ether been fever and headache, or being sick and now I have a hellish head-cold and a achey body - when will this lurgy go away!

I haven't been as sick in the past 34 years as I have this last two weeks - the kids just keep bringing it back fro nursery / school but where they have it for a day, recover and move on - the missus and I just get wiped out by it!!

While we're on the subject. Plenty of vegetables and liquids. Not orange juice though as it encourages mucus production. Heres a thing though. I heard somewhere that sugar supresses the immune system. Ok. But then I'm sure I also heard that the fructose in fruit also counts as sugar and that it should be avoided in favour of vegetables when you have a cold. Going against the general advice to eat plenty of fruit when you have the lurgy. Anyone got a view on this?

...Heavy, I think you're okay with the orange juice, I thought it was milk and dairy produce that promotes the production of mucus...

...just as an aside don't you hate the TV ad with TV exec type in the container telling you about nasel passage size and infection and telling us about "snot"...

Thanks guys...It's reassuring to know that I'm not the only one snuffling along....sniff sniff...

I'll be sticking to oranges, and vitamin C....probably should give in trying to fight the cold, leave out the healthy stuff for a couple of days.......

  • I seem to remember it being said that a cold lasts a week if you try to cure it and seven days if you don't . However if I've even got the first signs of a cold coming on then a nice Madras seems to work wonders and kind of 'blasts' the symptons away more often than not .

Well, they do seem to hang on but you can certainly take steps to reduce the mucus and ease the symptoms which means you don't feel so wiped out during and afterwards. I wouldn't give up the fight. I hate it when you have a really bad cold and you get mucus that actually smells a bit foul :? but I rarely have that, when I do get a cold I can usually keep the mucus relatively clear in colour by eating veg and vit C. I always think the colour and consistency tells you a bit about what stage of the cold you're at or how bad it is.

Here's my cold busting Spicey Bean Soup recipe....

    Large onion
    A Red pepper
A few handfuls of red lentils
    Tin of red kidney beans
    Fresh chillis
4 skinned tomatoes or a tin of plum/chopped tomatoes
    Cayenne pepper
    Tabasco sauce
    Pint of veg stock

Chop everything up and bung it in the pan, add stock and simmer for half an hour. All values are approximate. Experiment. Makes a nice warming/hot soup that feels like its sorting you out. Course, any solid veg soup is good I think. Easy to prepare when you don't really feel like cooking aswell.

Oh and as much garlic as you like. I use about 4 cloves but chuck in more for increased medicinal properties!

I have googled a few things about Orange juice and mucus but can't find any definitive answer. I do know though that if you take a gulp during/after excercise it really cloys up the mouth. I tend to water it down if I'm having it after a ride.

I had a heavy cold for two days just before Christmas - put me in bed for two days straight. I seemed to shake it off for a few weeks but now have a long lingering cold. :(
