Best saddle for a fatty

Hello all,

I know choice of saddle is a favourite thing, but I really don't know where to start. I commute 30 miles per day and the saddle that came with my Fratello is a right pain in the perineum. The other thing is that I'm not small -- over six feet and over 15 stone. I've looked up the site reviews but it's sometimes difficult to tell whether a seat is for road cycling or mountain biking (and in any case I'm not sure whether a more-padded MTB cycle is what I should be after anyway).

Any tips much appreciated.

in the case of any saddle over that sort of distance, you don't want lots of padding - it causes chaffing. It's preferable to have a harder saddle and then just let your behind just get used to it. Brooks Brothers make the best.
  • And wear padded cycling shorts / tights. Even if it is the sort that clip inside some baggy shorts / kickers / trousers.
It's not the winning or even taking part. It's the arsing about that counts.
  • I do wear padding...was more interested in whether those holes in the saddle work, and whether I should opt for a wider saddle. It's specifically my perineum that aches, my arse has enough padding!

I too am not short of padding in the arse department! I've tried a fair few saddles of which for me two spring to mind.
    1. The SDG Bell Air. Was available on On-Ones web site for £15 + P&P which is a bit of a bargain even if it is the steel railed version. I like it so much I have that saddle on all my bikes.
    2. The Charge Spoon- got one in brown on a retro SS road bike, again, very comfy and cool looking. But availability has been an issue for some.
Out of the two tho' the SDG gets my vote and its pretty cheap too.
It certainly doesn't look out of place on my Kaffneback....
