Hey,

Dont normally post just lurk but thought I'd ask for advice... Looking for a FS bike and have seen a couple of nice lookin 2007 FSR comps on ebay going for about £900. Is this a good deal for a 2nd hand FSR? They always seem to do well in magazines etc...

Cheers Guys!

  • Hi there,

I won't answer your question about whether it is a good deal as I'd be biased! But thought I'd mention I'm about to advertise my 2007 Stumpy Expert (rrp £2000), as Ive just ordered my first custom build.

I was thinking about keeping it as a second bike but I could really do with the money towards the new one. I'm looking for £1000 and would be happy to provide more details and photos if you're interested.

    Cheers

.Are you talking about the stumpy FSR Comp ot the FSR xc Comp?

£ 900 seems a little high for an FSR xc comp, can't remember what the rrp was last year (£1100 I think) but a quick google revealed JE James doing these for £ 899.99 now new(not recommending them, just an example). I'd have thought nearer £600 to £700 would be more appropriate second hand depending condition.

It sounds a lot better for the stumpy, they retailed at £1500 last year and are being discounted to around £1300 if you can find one.

When I bought my stumpy elite last year the guy in Leisure Lakes told me to expect the bike to lose approx 50% of it value in it's first year and then somewhat less each year after that.

I'm sure more knowledgeable members will correct me if I'm wrong :D

    I've bought a new bike....ouch - result

The ones I've seen have both been Stumpies. Look good but just wanted more advice really. The guy selling one of them wants to go back to a hardtail cos he prefers it - do a lot of people do this? Seems pointless to spend money on a FS bike if I decide I dont like FS after a few rides which could be what he's done.

For your info I paid £900 for a 5 month old 2007 Elite in November, RRP £1800.

Love it, not one regret about buying it, much prefer it to my old hardtail.

The comps were discounted to £1200 in many places when they still had stock.
  • I was watching 2007 Stumpy FSR Comps on eBay a couple of months ago, none of the ones I watched made it to £900, most were roughly £850 with a couple between £750-£800.

You might still get a new one for £1195 if you're interested:

I just can't get over the number of people who seem to spend this much on a bike new to sell it on again in a few months :?: . It'd take a crow bar (or a siginificantly better free bike) to prise me away from my stumpy elite.

  • I have a 2007 Stumpy FSR Comp, its a superb bike. Its certainly heavier than my hardtail but despite that it climbs better becasue its got more grip. I've managed to tune the suspension so i can't even feel it moving which to my mind is how suspension should work.
The only issue i have is the low bottom bracket height.

    Cheers guys,

think i'll wait and see what happens. Reckon I prob need to try and get a decent FS to test for a week or so if poss - dont reckon 1 or 2 laps of dalby will give much real indication if I like the feel cos I'll be overwhelmed by the novelty of going faster! (or just fast  )

Lots of people must change their minds about FS though cos you do see quite a few for sale 2nd hand. Maybe "hardcore" hardtail is the new FS...

Maybe a lot of people sell Spesh bikes on relatively quickly because it's a popular brind with beginners - who are perhaps more likely to abandon the sport?
  • Before going the Stumpy route,I`d also look at other bikes like the Giant Trance or Trek Fuel EX8.

These not being as fashionable at Specialized, seem to be sold on at lower prices, despite being every bit as good.

There are still a lot of 2007 Trances around,on which there are some great deals to be had.You might find that you can find a better specced bike, for the same money.

Take a look at some of the deals here:
