Rear Cassette question

I know this might sound a bit stupid but if i have a shimano rear hub and need to buy a new cassette as i am replacing an old cheap wheel with a 7 spd cassette on it, does it need to be shimano??!
Would i be able to use the old 7spd shimano cassette for the time being on my new wheel? The wheel takes 8/9 so does this mean it will only take these cassette configurations??!!
I was looking at either the shimano XT 9spd m760 or the SRAM 9spd PG970
I assume that i would need to get a corresponding derailer, chain and gear changing trigger set? Could some1 tell me if i am right?! and if you guys think this is a decent set up for an XC rider on a budget???
Cheers in advance, J

I love the sound my tyres make on dusty single track!

If it is a 7sp cassette then yes you can use it on an 8/9spd hub as long as you use a spacer. as the free body is wider.
then for the 9spd you will need new cassette/chain and shifter as a minimum.
front mech and chain rings may be needed depending on what was fitted originally. the rear mech will just need re setting."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."
