Ive just spent the last 10 years riding offroad bikes, problem is that a vast percentage of my riding is done on the road, in April im looking at purchasing a new bike for £1000 or less, my first urge was to purchase another offroad machine, however im now reconsidering this and i think im possibly gonna edge towards a road machine, ideally a hybrid(ish) of somesort. My problem revolves around the fact i dont know what bike are good and what arent. Ive looked at a few of the Marins and they are georgeous, problem is i dont know what value for money they represent.

For no more than a £1000 what machine would you recommend?
I found it hard, its was hard to find, oh well whatever nevermind.

I'd go for a cyclocross bike over a hybrid everytime - a cyclocross bike is better on and off the road.

£800 and the one I'd go for:

Wiggle have quite a few good Cyclo-X bikes within your budget:

I had a look at the disc-braked Konas - They do a superb looking metallic green frame in straight and drop bar 700c config. - sorry, not sure of the name.

For something a bit different, how about a 29er, if you can find one with a "solid" fork?

I recently considered putting a suspension fork on my old Steel Stumpy, but after realising how much weight it would add, I just stuck a 26x2.3 balloon tyre on it - seems to do the trick and keeps it nice and light!

I've always found Ridgeback/Genesis good value.

If you're doing light off-roading, I'd steer clear of anything with dual-pivot brakes, as they're not exactly as powerful as V-brakes/disc brakes.

If you want a decent hybrid and can stand the 'Halfords stigma' then the Boardman range offers good value & well equipped hybrids. Planet X also do some nice stuff in the way of cyclo-cross steeds - see www.planet-x-bikes.co.uk.
