I want something....
Upright for close control driving
Powerful (vroomvroom)
Damn good at sucking up dust/detritus
Bagless for ease of use and being able to see all the filth inside
Reasonably priced (up to about £150)
and
Sturdy so it doesn't break when I veer off onto the rough
What hot rod can you point me in the direction of?!

Really? I heard they suck ( ) in practice?0

Another vote for the Dyson. I had one, then lost custody of it, and missed it so much that I got another one. But it'll stretch your budget a bit....***********************

There was a similar question on the model aircraft forum I haunt and the general view was that Dysons aren't as good as all that and that Henrys are the ones to go for. Bear in mind that aeromodellers use vacuum cleaners to suck up lumps of balsa and other heavier detritus.
We've had a Dyson for some years and it seems OK. I've had to replace the on/off switch and the motor though. They're not that easy to work on.
GeoffOld cyclists never die; they just fit smaller chainrings ... and pedal faster0 -
I've had a few Dysons and I've gone back to bags....... I've currently got a Miele and it's so powerfull --- 2200 watts. Ouch
I also have one of those little Dyson hand held jobbies. Rubbish.Paul0 -
We had to purchase the very same thing at the weekend. The phillips thing we had (only for 18 months) was shockingly bad, it just didn't pick anything up.
We opted for a Dyson, the OH had carried out some user trials (i.e borrowed my Mums ) and decided that it was the best option. The new one on evidence is very good, the living room carpet looks new!!
I have a soft spot for Henrys, all rented houses I lived at while at uni had a Henry (and I've seen lots of friends who had them at uni), they were very good, very strong, and can handle a fair bit of abuse.0 -
Sebo X1 Automatic....................the most thoroughly engineered bit of vacuum technology I've ever purchased (that's Germans for ya). No idea on current cost but well worth it in my opinion - had ours 12 years now and just spent £40 on replacement roller etc (parts still available, how refreshing!) and it's running beautifully again.
It does have a bag, but they don't need changing too often. Also has automatic height adjust which is a handy little feature.0 -

I have a Sebo.....
Golf ball through a hosepipe........
Serious power.... And my Mrs empties the bags, so it is not an issue for me!0 -
Forget the silly plastic see-through hyped-up Dysons, not impressive at all.
If you want a decent hoover you buy a Sebo. No contest. German efficiency at its best.0 -

Another massive vote for Sebo which has hospital grade filters.
Consider
1) Power in Watts is the electricity consumption - this does not always have a direct relationship with the amount of dirt removed from your home.
2) Bagless or not, a lot of cleaners recirculate dust that was on the floor, back into the air. To stop that happening, filters are used. You could therefore argue that the effectiveness of a cleaner can be measured also by the quality of its filters.
I have had a Sebo for 8 years. It is excellent. Originally bought it appease allergy prone asthmatics in the house, but have come to appreciate a genuinely clean room to the point where I might be developing a bit of OCD...."There are holes in the sky,
Where the rain gets in.
But they're ever so small
That's why rain is thin. " Spike Milligan0 -
Hmmm...my Ma has a Sebo that she raves about too. Looks like I'd have to up my budget if I got one of those though. Although I was looking at a Hoover in Comet last night but the reviews on Amazon are appalling so I'd be wasting my money there.0

...surely this is a subject for women?
(...leaves forum at great speed...)...all the way...'til the wheels fall off and burn...0 -
Its all about raw power Chris! This subject is for no tame hearted woman! I want a dust destroyer, a king of the carpet....a err, rug muncher....? :roll:0

...Heavy, you need a maid with a strong arm and a carpet beater...she'll get the job done and more besides :P ...technology is all very well ,but sometimes the old ways are the best......all the way...'til the wheels fall off and burn...0

You're right! I want to have to step over her as she's scrubbing the doorstep in the morning.
I'll have a look and see if I can get one from Wiggle!0 -
I see no one has suggested a Polti.....0

Ok my hoovering friends. I've made the decision.
I've ordered a Dyson DC07 from Argos. £229 down to £150. In name, and I'm told in function too, it sounds enough like an aeroplane to make the grade as a manly cleaning machine. The Sebo just couldn't compete on price and with all the women in my office clucking about how good their Dysons are I think its a decision well made.
I can't wait to take it on its maiden voyage around the skirting boards tomorrow night.
 :? :oops:0 -
I dont think yer gonna get a dyson for less than 150 quid.
get a 1400w panasonic bagless job.Whenever I see an adult on a bicycle, I believe in the future of the human race.

Well, I've got one for £150. Actually...£145 as I have a £5 off voucher!0

Happy Hoovering! (If in fact you can 'hoover' with a Dyson....)
As for you, Chris...... ***********************

Kaa! I almost PM'd you after Chris' suggestion about the maid! Decided a Dyson would require less cups of tea though.0
-
Great minds think alike, eh? The pair of you need a good talking to... :x :x
I had my Dad staying with me all last week while his house was getting re-wired and he attempted to use the Dyson one day and gave up on it... He seemed sceptical when I was telling him later how good it is!
And I can't quite believe that my first posts of the year are related to hoovering. I need to get out more...***********************

Dyson Animal - very good, but a bit fragile - ours is used daily - 3 cats and two messy kids. Had a few parts break (hoses, handle, motor, middle bit...) but we have an extended warranty on it so it's not a problem.....0
