Second Set of Wheels or Not?

I think this may have been touched on in another topic - so if Im covering old ground I apologise.

I ride on the road and cycle paths as part of my fitness training through the week, but weekends a few of us go off-road trail riding. This does change sometimes.

I am forever changing my tyres from slicks to nobblies (and vice-versa) and Im wondering if simply buying a second set of rims would be an answer to me constantly changing tyres?

Most of you will probably tell me to simply get my hands dirty and change tyres when needed, but this is becoming a bit of a bind.

But could anyone give advice on a nice set of wheels I could buy? - Or if this is actually advised (given I would be using 2 cassettes on 1 chain)

My budget isnt huge, so interested in any ideas.

Your wise input is most welcome.............

It's not theoretically ideal to use two cassettes with one chain but I've never had any problems swapping wheels. There's nice wheels and there's NICE wheels so we need a budget really.

The other alternative is a tyre combo that'll do both and again if that's of interest we can suggest some.

Tyre option isnt really ideal, as it goes from silky smooth road, to 6inchs of mud!

My budget would be at less than £100 for a new set of rims, hubs and a cassette.

I wouldnt necessarily need an all-rounder in terms of performance so if off-road wheels are cheaper then I'd opt to buy them and keep my stock wheels for road (or the other way round if you get my drift?)

Would you need new brake rotors within that budget too?

WHat are your stock wheels? Do you run disc brakes?

Yes, new brake rotors will be needed in that also.

Supersonic : My stock wheels are what come with my Giant XTC SE 06 - I dont know any more than that Im afraid.

You are going to have to ensure the rotors sit in exactly the same place in relation to the old wheels, or the brakes will rub/bind. You can get rotor shims for this. Be aware that you may have to make minor adjustments to the rear mech too.

A Merlin wheelset (ie Deore on 317 rims) will be 74 quid. 8spd casssette around 20 quid, then at least a tenner a piece for the rotors.

My suggestion is different, but a bit over budget I'm afraid:

    Deore disc hubs £17:50+£22.50
    DT Comp spokes @55p each = £35.20
Mavic Open Sport 700c rims @£15 each

    Total £105.20

This would allow you to run proper road bike tyres and a road cassette on these wheels and MTB tyres and MTB cassette on your existing. Best of both worlds.

Like this set Supersonic? I have MPH brakes though(?)

Splasher : Im assuming I will need to pay someone to have that kit built too? (cant do that myself)

I do like the idea of a road set and an off-road set of wheels - which is exactly what I technically need them for I guess!

Yeah, something like that set, the the included rotors would be too small as MPH are 164mm.

You may be able to get a raodset built up from certain shops cheaper than Splashers suggested prices.

That would include building at that price. If you get some built up to a different spec just make sure you get MTB hubs with disc mounts and road rims.
