Land Rover Bikes - and then some more

Just wondering if anybody has rode or even owns one of the new Land Rover bikes. I'm on the lookout for a new ride and although some of the bikes in the range have pretty decent specs I haven't heard much about them.
Any views would be appreciated

I have looked at them in passing before. Looked reasonable, but it seemed that most of the cheaper models had 21 gears compared to the 24 or even 27 on similarly priced bikes."Melancholy is incompatible with bicycling." ~James E. Starrs0

Dont go for it. Car manufacturers never make a bike that well, possibly excluding the honda dh bike with the whole gearbox business.
a nice genesis or marin would probably suit you a bit better, designed for the uk and that and especially the genesis' have a lovely spec for the price, and their named after the classic band.
dont know about you but land rover sort of cunjurs up images of a giant behemoth of a bike.

Only looking to spend about 350 - 400 quid. I'm only a beginner and don't want to fall into "all the gear no idea" category. I have also been looking at the following
GT Avalance 2
Claud Butler Cape Wrath
Specialized Hardrock
Mongoose Tyax (I think thats the one)
There have been a few others as well but these are available from a few bike shops near by so I can try before I buy.
Any views on these?
Also one of the shops I went to said that because of my size (6ft 5in and 20 stone) I would need to spend about 800 - 900 quid to get a suitable bike. This seemed excessive to me, does anyone agree with him or was he just trying to get more cash out of me.0 -
£800 - £900 will get you a highly specced hardtail. (Hydraulics/27spd/XT or X-9, decent wheels and finishing kit all pretty much guaranteed) Where-as on a £350 - £400 you'll maybe get a few things that are on more expensive model (probably heavier wheels etc though).0

At that size and weight you definitely want to consider a bike suitable for the larger gentleman. Perhaps even start a new thread on here as I'm sure others can help.
The fact that you'll be after an XL bike and are on a budget may actually work to your favour, since the less common sizes are often left over and you might get a good price on a 2007 or even 2006 bike.0 -

It's not 'in fashion' at the moment but i love mine and it does feel bomb-proof so maybe ok for your 'dimensions'
But you probably won't get many more votes for the Hardrock, Mongoose will probably be mostly recommended.
I'm not a big expert but saying you need to spend £800 on a hardtail for your size seems way excessive and i would be tempted to avoid the shop in future with that sort of advice.0
