Both have score well in budget full suss results, IIRC the decathlon came in just above the banshee, but they are both heavy. Do you really need the full suss?0

To paraphrase Keith Bontrager MTB buying mantra: Good - Cheap - Full Suss. Pick any two!I'm only concerned with looking concerned0

It sounds terribly snobby to say, but to get good suspension £300 is the budget for a shock, not a whole bike.
Seriously, think about a hardtail, you can get some crackers at this price point."Internet Forums - an amazing world where outright falsehoods become cyber-facts with a few witty key taps and a carefully placed emoticon."0 -
You would do much better to save up a bit more, and get something like this:http://www.paulscycles.co.uk/products.php?plid=m1b4s1p1291
Thats about the cheapest worthy full suspension bike,I`ve seen,Heres a test of the 2008 version, which spec wise is much the same. The main difference is that the current model has a lighter frame, but most of the comments, will apply to the 07.

Other contenders would be a Specialized FSR XC or a GT i drive.2006 Giant XTC
2010 Giant Defy Advanced
2016 Boardman Pro 29er
2016 Pinnacle Lithium 4
2017 Canondale Supersix Evo0 -
Thes two bikes are designed for different purposes, and are different prices. The Banshee is much heavier, has longer travel, slacker angles and is designed for rougher terrain.0

Decathlon all the way, just got my rockrider 9 frame and it rides like a dream, a bit wet muddy dream.
If your desparate for a full sus try saracens recoil limited edition. not sure what your budget is but i found this for 425.

Hardtail might be the better option like many are saying. In that case one of these might be nice at about 500

well i am hoping to do a lot of riding in the lakes and around there so i am not sure which is best for it, hardtail or full suss.0 -

i've gone from full sus to hardtail and did several of the wales trail centres on it and will be doing scotland soon too. you don't *need* a full sus and at that price i think a hardtail would be better for your money.0

Another vote for a hardtail, please.
And try to make it a steel one, more comfy probably.
The full-sus bikes at that level will be simply too heavy for you to enjoy as much as a hardtail.
Jpembroke - I love that quote!0 -
Not many steel bikes at this price though!
The Rockrider did get a good review, but I wouldnt like to give it too much hammer.0 -

Too true - I regularly do the South Wales trail centres (and the DH at Cwmcarn) on a hardtail. I'd like to try it on a decent full suss though; I imagine it would be slightly less terrifying.0 -
You do not need a full susser period.
I regularly ride the black runs at Glentress and Innerleithen on my Hardrock Sport Disc.
That, or something similar would probably do you better than a cheap full susser.Whenever I see an adult on a bicycle, I believe in the future of the human race.

most of you are suggesting get a hardtail.
so which one?
but i would like one that is quiet cheap (preferably less than £500 if possible)0 -
i've got a giant stp which is really good for doing absolutly anything you want and can be set up loads of different ways. the frame on the £300 complete bike is the same as on the £650 top model and is worthy of a really top spec complete build if your looking to upgrade it. Rob Warner uses one for getting his hardtail downhill thrills
the spesh hardrock is really good as well but i wouldn't be as happy thrashing it down a DH run as it is more XC focused
look at the GT agressor as well apparently its amazing
there are absolutly loads of sweet hardtails swimming around at this price and you just need to take your pick. theres no doubt you'll end up with an amazing bike if you go for a hardtailI took falling off bikes...and turned it into an art!0 -
the only one i really know of is the gt avalanche 2007 which got some great reviews i'd have thought they couldn't mess the new one up too much.0
-
there are loads of different hardtails with different specs which one is good for doing trails?0
-
-
For a 200 quid bike it looks ok - but if you have the money you might as well spend it. Fork is awfull.0
-
ohhh....thats the bike i got at the moment, but i got it 75% off it and some free stuff so it will do for now.0
