anything round the £50 mark will be good, look for FSA, cane creek or raceface. You could stretch to a hope perhaps, for some coloured tartiness.0

hey, nother headset question, easier than starting a new thread, ha. but does anyone use a hop headset for FR/DH??? I want one, but ive heard there only for XC/All mountain... hmm. steerers 1 1/8, on a hardtail with 130mm travel. cheers guys.i ride a hardtail0

Have a look at the ck vs. diablous thread in the freeride section, i'd imagine that fr/dh is a bit much for a hope with a single crown fork, but they are probably okay for dual crown forks.0

ok, cheers for that. shame actually, really liked the look of the hope!!!i ride a hardtail0

For my FR rig I ended up going for an FSA Pig DH Pro and it really is a solid, good quality headset. Although it doesn't used sealed bearings it made very well and as long as it's packed out with grease it will run for a decent time before service is needed....0

Also depending on your frame you might want a CK steelset for a bit of extra burliness.0

I'd disagree about the Hope, I can 100% recommend it!!! I've had one on my BMX for 4years or so now, and i'd imagine it's had more abuse than it'd ever get if it was fitted to my MTB. Oh, and it's still silky smooth!!
A quick google search finds you some around £50:

I have the FSA Pig on my XC bike and I imagine it'd be ideal for a Dawg.
It still runs smooth and has stayed sealed despite my riding the bike with too much play in the spacers for a month or two.0 -

ha, back over in the freeride forum ive been reccomended the hope again... ireckon im gona go for that (in pimpy red!!!) out of interest do you use the hed doctor??? heard there a bit poor. cheers...i ride a hardtail0 -
No mate...on BMX forks the 'star fangled nut' is actually a big welded-in insert inside the steerer, tapped to recieve a huge threaded bolt!!
I don't think i'd even use a Head Doctor on a MTB...i'd use a star fangled nut - they are a bitch to get out once they're in place, so they're unlikely to budge during regular riding.0 -
sorry my bmx knowledge is poor at best well i use a long threaded rod type affair, that clamps at the top of the stem (as normal) and the bottom of the steerer...
this kinda affair:

just heard lots of reviews that the hed doctor kept shearing... ah well, wont use it anyway.i ride a hardtail0 -
The 'Head Doctor' being the top nut affair that comes with the Hope headset? I don't think i'd bother with it if you're running a Headlock at the mo...keep that instead.0

Don't run the hed doctor, really hard to get to work reliably, the setup mentioned with the long rod is a head lock, I use them because it is then easier to switch over forks.0
