Best Hardtail for less than £300

Another pop quiz - the best hardtail for under £300 - my possible contenders found so far:

Mongoose Tyax Super 2007 for £279.99

Riding requirements - some trails and some urban commuting

As a separate question - any recommendations for my two daughters aged 16 and 12 - both need beginners MTBs - one large size and one small? They are not mega keen cyclists so I want to spend under £200 but on something decent. So far I have seen the Mongoose Rockadile which looks ok. Is a women's specific bike important?

Best bike IMHO for trail riding is the Tyax that you mentioned - this years is not quite as good. For gentler rides you may prefer something with V brakes and lighter weight. Do try them however - means nowt if you dont like the riding position!

When you say "this year's" Tyax isn't quite as good do you mean 2007 or 2008?

This years being the 2008 version. Fork is of lower quality on the newer one - this is what made the last one stand out, its adjustable hydraulic rebound damping. Discs not as good either according to reports.
