I am so p1ssed off. I got my bike 3 weeks ago and this morning it fell over an the brake lever bent, which just shows how rubbish some budget components on bikes actually are.

So basically i need a new pair of brake levers for mainly XC and trail riding. The brakes are Shimano BR-M485 Hydraulic. Disc and the levers are Shimano BL-M485. Now obviously i dont want those levers and I dont really wanna spend over 20 quid either so can any body suggest any good levers. I also have no idea how to put the new levers on so advice on this would be good too

well there are no replacement levers at that price. Just get a replacement lever to fit your assembly.

how much would i be looking then to spend on a new lever and what would you recommend?
  • You won't get a pair for that price. You can get this and replace the one you broke for that price, but otherwise you are looking at about £40 for a set of LX levers (inc oil).

Check out Park Tools or Shimano for a guide to doing their brakes

    Err NO. not needed.

LBS and get a replacement lever for your set. should only be a few pounds.

I only suggested that because I couldn't find a lever for his lever assembly on the Madison public and dealer site. http://www.ultimatepursuits.co.uk/search/results.aspx?product=m485&vertical=1 Those are the only M485 spares they have.

Unless a different lever model would fit, but I didn't know that, so I only suggested what I knew would work for him

they often dont put spares on their website. when i sheared a deore lx hollowtech crank arm, i looked for ages, and for love nor money i couldnt find a spare. went to my bike shop, two minute phone call and it was winging its way to me. bout month and half later, it actually arrived...

old trick that works especially well with hydraulics and saves a lot of hassle and cost. Dont tighten the bolt too much, just enough that it wont come loose when youre riding. If you crash it just moves the angle of the lever rather than breaking it. just make sure its not too loose
