hi guys,
just fitted my manitou stance static 05 to my bike, i have them in 1 1/8 which is definately the correct size for my frame however there seems to be a little bit of play when the steerer tube is inside the frame and all is fitted together, how do i get ride of this? also, the steering seems a little stiff, will a little bit of lube or whatever on the steerer tube sort this out?
cheers

This is a headset problem. Is it all put together in the right order, and the top cap able to preload the bearings correctly?0

The top cap screws down, and pulls the stem (and spacers, if present) onto the bearing. This can only be done with the sem bolts loose, and is very important to adjust the bearings correctly to stop the wobble you describe. Once adjusted, nip the stem bolts back up to hold all in place.
Did you swap the crown race over from your last fork?0 -
oh ok thanks for the tip. as for the crown race thing im not sure wat that is. if it is the little thing inside the steerer tube that the top cap screws into then the answer to that is yes.0

Thats called the star nut - the crown race is the bit that fits over the sterrer tube, and presses agains the fork crown,: an essential part of the headset and must be moved from the old fork to the new one. Pic here, slightly raised from the crown, and also showing the fitting tool:

im such a fool!!!! i looked at that very piece and thought it might be part of the headset but i thought it was completely attached to the current fork! thanks mate thats probably explains just about everything and i will be changing it first thing. is that difficult to get of and also would my new fork have been damaged from being very lightly ridden without this piece attached?0

It wont be good for either headset or the crown, but should be ok!0
