HUBBUB SHIMERGO CONVERSION
Does anyone know if the conversion described here is still possible with the new generation of Shimano shifters?

Do you mean Shimano shifters or Campag?
As far as I'm aware most people hubbub Shimano gears with Campag shifters.
Last year I used an ultegra rear mech(hubbub) with Record 10sp shifters, but the shifters were pre QS,although I see no reason why QS ones wouldn't work-perhaps someone else can add to this.

I mean Campag 10 shifters Shimano hub/cassette (non Hubbubed) 8spd or (Hubbubed) 9spd
and want to know if the configuration of the pinch bolt on the current generation of Shimano rear mechs had changed
I'm having some Open Pro rims built on disc XT hubs for my crosser, and am wondering whether to go 8spd or 9spd....“It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best..." Ernest Hemingway0 -
Only know about the latest Tiagra mech which can be Hububbed, which I believe involves turning the cable clamp 90 degrees to slightly change the ratio of cable pull to mech movement. I have only tried turning the clamp and nothing else so far. I am hoping to use Shimano 8 speed Sora shifters with an Ultegra 9 speed cassette and Tiagra 9 speed mech.0

I currently use Shimano Sora 8 speed STI with a Campag 8speed 12-25t cassette and the whole system shifts flawlessly and silently. Never had a missed shift. They are used with a Mirage front and rear mech.
I am ,like Dave , thinking of using all shimano gears with a campag cassette because the wheels I have set my heart on (Khamsins gold) are only available with campag freehub Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
I am trying to decide whether to upgrade to Sora 9 speed STI or go the whole hog and go up to 10 speed 105 STI and whether or not I can still get the whole thing to work.0 -
To add to my previous post, my configuration is- Record 10sp shifters, Ultegra 9/10 sp rear mech with cable clamp turned 90 degrees(ie Hubbubbed--how many b's in Hubbbub?), and 9sp Shimano cassette. It all works perfectly.Shifters probably year 2006,rear mech and cassette year 2007
Hope this helps,

There hasn't been any change in either Shimano or Campag rear shifting, so Campag 10 shifters still work as is with a Shimano 8 cassette and mech, or with the cable clamped Hubbub on a 9 cassette.
What has changed is the Campag front shifting - in 2007 the cable pull changed to Quickshift / QS. At the same time, the number of clicks on the lower-end front Ergolevers was reduced so there isn't the same fine trim that made use with any front mech easy.
Because of this you are best off with 2006 or earlier Ergos if you can find them, or current Record/Chorus if you can't.
For other combinations (eg Campag 10 cassette with Shimano shifters/mech), look into the Jtek Shiftmate.0 -

You could always use a J-tec shiftmate.0

My new XT mech arrived this afternoon, and on checking it, it appears the hook and tab on the pinch bolt, can't be used to clamp the wire effectively in any other way than they were designed....
Back to square one-which is to use the more expensive solution of the Shimano Marchisio cassette
Boxed XT rear mech anyone?“It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best..." Ernest Hemingway0 -
Like andrew_s says above, I understand that Campag 10 shifters work fine with Shimano 8sp cassette & rear mech without any cable-pull converters. 9sp is a different matter and would need Hubbub
Presumably you've looked at Chris Juden's article at CTC ?
http://www.ctc.org.uk/DesktopDefault.aspx?TabID=3946
Shimano 8sp shifters pull 2.8mm of cable per click, so coincidentally do Campag 10sp shifters, their corresponding rear mechs convert this cable-pull into the different sideways movement appropriate for the sprocket spacing on their respective cassettes.
So if you have Campag 10sp shifters and a Shimano hub and rear mech, aren't too bothered whether to go 8sp or 9sp, why not simply fit a Shimano 8sp cassette ?0 -

Thanks for that...it doesn't say if I should run an 8spd chain or a 10spd chain
the pitch of my Campag chainrings is for 10spd-but if I use a Shimano 8spd cassette, will shifting be OK with the 10spd chain?“It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best..." Ernest Hemingway0 -
Hmmm, dunno.
Of the two, probably 10sp, or perhaps go midway : 9sp ?
I guess the issue is the internal width of the chain (needs to be thin enough for 10sp chainring and yet wide enough for 8sp cog) and external width (not too thick for the 10sp front mech so that it's always rubbing, not too thin for the Shimano rear mech so it doesn't shift cleanly : I can't really believe it'll be so thin it'll get jammed between cogs or anything)
So which speed chain, but also which make, is the question - Shimano, Campag, SRAM, KMC, etc
I've run both 8sp and 9sp SRAM chains with Shimano 9sp 105 F&R mechs and 8sp shifters and cassette OK - I did a bit of looking around and decided the internal width of the chain was the same, the difference was in the plates/rivets meaning the external width was different, but also different between SRAM and Shimano :-
Shimano HG 8 speed = 7.4mm wide
Shimano HG 9 speed = 6.6mm wide
SRAM 8 speed = 7.1mm wide
SRAM 9 speed = 6.9mm wide
But 10sp is a different question again, and I wasn't looking at Campag...0
