Brake scrape

I had a little "mishap" today after taking advice from someone who clearly had no clue and managed to sink my bike and myself up to the axle on the front wheel (luckily I was off the seat before the back sank up to the mech). I've cleaned the gunk off now but the rear break seems to be scraping a bit. My first intention is to have the wheel off, use a soft cloth and water to "polish" the disc and then try to get at the pads to get the crap off them.

Is this the right approach?

Yes. Though usually a few good stops will clear all the crap off anyway. Could be possible some gunk is behind the pads, or the seals are gunged, slowling the pad retraction down. If in doubt, remove pads, clean, inspect, put back together.

I'll give the discs a wipe and then hoon up and down the road. Well once my shoes are dry enough to wear again, they suffered badly in the quagmire.
