Shell width and threading rather than diameter. Sheldon explains all.0

The Italian thread is cut with a right hand thread on both sides ot the bottom bracket; whereas one of the cups of the English threaded bottom bracket is cut with a left hand thread.
Edit - too slow lolHas the head wind picked up or the tail wind dropped off???0 -
And they are different diameters.
Never ceases to amze me that Italian BB threads are M36 x 24Threads per INCH0 -

Thats easy - it's a lot easier to abbreviate "threads per inch" than it is "threads per twentyfive point four millimetres"Has the head wind picked up or the tail wind dropped off???0 -
Oh ok. So an English threaded BB won't fit into an Italian threaded and vice versa?0

Nope - definately notHas the head wind picked up or the tail wind dropped off???0

Maybe yes if you use two right hand cups - just joking
Wonder why we have this forum at all.
Because there is always somebody saying look at sheldon brown.
Personally I think he is useless.
I guess most others think so too.
Thats why we have this forum then.
See there, answered my own question.0 -

Well said that man, couldn't agree more. I guess Sheldon was helpful in his time but given so much of the equipment has moved on and his info is now out of date, still some think its the only place for info so they must also be out of date0 -

HM was asking about bottom bracket sizes so rather than explaining in great detail I pointed him in the direction of a table which neatly summarises all available types. It's up to him to follow the link or not but it may have been that the answers he had left him a bit uncertain so looking at something else may have helped.
I've never met Sheldon Brown so have no view on his usefulness. What I do know is that his site is the best free resource on the web for most bike mechanical questions.0 -
gundersen and shooter560, cheap shots against Sheldon Brown, poor comments to make, you should be ashamed of yourselves0

Please answer why I should be ashamed of myself, is this revered Mr S Brown the new god??0 -
I think its because he's an all round decent bloke and is having alot of problems with his health recently so people have an affection for him and don't like to see him rubbished. I don't use his site that much but appreciate that he's put alot of useful information up there.0

OK then - I have no use for the website - therefore in my eyes it is useless.
Forums like this one are of ten times the value. Because here I can get more than one opinion on any subject, rather than one old codgers opinion.0
