Can anyone suggest a front light, Ideally under £30, that has enough power to illuminate the way ahead in dark unlit areas?

    £30 is a bit difficult.

I've got a cateye single shot plus, £70ish, you get what you pay for. You'll struggle to see much for less than £30.

Someone on another thread recommended a Fenix thing:

It's not quite under £30 but almost, (well, it's under £40... just) and I bought one and it's absolutely stunning for what it is. And the flimsy-looking velcro bike mount is actually surprisingly pretty good. The best thing is that unlike many rechargeable lights, this one uses standard AA batteries, so carrying spares is really easy. The instructions are pants but with a bit of fiddling you find all the settings.

smart 10w, either the new 10w , or the older fashioned 10w/10w (or 10w/2.4w)

You can get them on ebay for that amount, or my LBS has the newer version on offer for 30... battery is heavy but you can pick up spares from maplins for like 4 quid

I use them to comute on completely unlit roads and they are not bad, you do get what you pay for an i will be upgrading, but i had a budget at the time like you.

    Electron 5w / 10w...

Little bit over your budget but the 5w is ok to be seen, the 10w is ok for lighting up the road ahead.....

  • I would'nt recommend the Electron llights i bought a set before christmas and sent them back ironically to Wiggle. would however recomend the Cateye single shot plus even though they are way past your budget.

The Fenix light is great - i used one as a helmet light over Christmas for night riding on pitch black trails. Don't shine it in people's eyes though, it's blinding
  • Another vote for the Fenix. Very bright and multiple setting. It even spells out SOS in morse code on one of the settings.

you can still get a cateye RC220 at GB cycles for 24.99. this is robust, has 5+10W seetings and a good run time. Not light, but sturdy.I've had one for 6 years.
